We woke up at home to see what Santa brought (in addition to all the very nice gifts from friends and family) then packed up the car for Christmas part deux in North Carolina at a lovely house Susan and Loren rented for a Clark-Williams Christmas. Many more photos in the vacations section.

We took in the Botanic Garden Christmas trains this morning and were so taken by the snowy field around the Capitol Christmas tree we wandered by there on our way to lunch. A few more photos on the same page in the vacations section.

Snow man day

Snow Fort

We ended up with 17.5 inches on the ground and a big pile of shoveled snow which we turned into a fort. Sarah had the great idea to add a window to the fort (I’ve never really had enough snow to play with to think about a fort with a window. A few more photos on the same page in the vacations section.

But it’s tapering off now.

It was too snowy and windy for a lot of fun today but we’re looking forward to plenty of snow for sledding tomorrow. More snow pictures in the vacation section.

They are pretty sure this will be the biggest December snowfall for the DC area. And it may make it into the record books for one of the larger snow storms ever. Robert, of course, is having a blast (until we insist he come in and thaw out). Here he shows off his snow scootering technique.

I managed to sneak into Robert’s school this morning to take a couple pictures. Well, not really sneak. At any rate, they were doing physical assessments this morning — here’s Robert proving he can run.

Not War and Peace

But pretty impressive for Robert’s first letter. He made an envelope and decided it should go to Nathan in his class.

“I am Robert. I am 5. I am cat”

He’s been a cat for a while now: tonight, at bed time, Zip Drive happened to wander into his room and the two of them had a nice little conversation.

I am especially proud of his Robert, his lower case letters are much better than mine. I’ve pretty much given up on lower case when I write (and, of course, my writing is mostly illegible anyway). He was working hard on those lower case letters and I think this shows them off very well.

We’re getting ready for Christmas. We picked up our tree before the “big snowstorm of 2009” (which snowed a lot but let the ground clear) and decorated it during the storm while we patiently waited for enough snow to have a snowball fight — Robert’s idea. Unfortunately, we didn’t get enough snow on the ground; but we do have a lovely tree now.

The Seattlites (David and Ian) did a great job on the Thanksgiving dinner. And the weather was great for a visit here. We checked out Castle Roberto, Mt. Vernon and still had time for baseball. More photos in the vacation section.
