Personal Tech History 25-ish years ago, I read someone I believed to not be crazy (Tim Bray, or Cory Doctorow, I think) extol the virtues of “owning” a piece of the Internet. Having returned from Costa Rica not too many years before then, I liked “kayakero” (some of my raft company coworkers had taken to calling me kayakero mystico due to my squirt boat safety boating — thank you Ken for hauling the boats, er surfboards, down). And I hoped to homestead on the Internet as kayakero.org. But that was not available at the time. As Register.com merged with (was subsumed by) Network Solutions I went to make sure I still had access to the configuration items I need. And NetSol happily pointed out that kayakero.org was now available. So I picked that up. I don’t expect I’ll shift things over and I’m not sure what I’ll do with that domain. But a small part of me feels like my patience paid off. Of course when the renewal comes due, at higher than the initial offer price, I may let that domain go back into the pool for someone else to pick up. And those 25-ish years have blunted my prior interactions with NetSol — I vaguely remember not wanting to use them as a registrar to start with. But I don’t recall specifically why anymore. Optimistically speaking, I won’t be reminded now that I’m their customer. |

Fun Musical We drove back up to New York yesterday to visit Little Island and see The Gospel of Colonus, their final show. It was a great show; I’m really glad David Z. pointed it out and that Sarah was able to get tickets. I went in to it almost clueless — Sarah gave me a very brief overview. It was fantastic; I never would have thought I’d enjoy Greek Tragedy that much :) I can only imagine the original show, with The Blind Boys of Alabama and Morgan Freeman playing Oedipus. This version was great! And we really enjoyed being out of Alexandria’s swampy weather (we’ve been spoiled by a week in Seattle); the outdoor amphitheater was a very nice venue (except for the occasional, overly loud party boat going up the Hudson during quieter moments). The drive up was a little slow, but we gave ourselves plenty of time and arrived with time to walk around for a bit and enjoy the breeze. It’s too bad Amtrak hasn’t figured out how to price tickets from DC to NYC that are reasonable. We’d much rather take the train than drive. The drive back was more exciting than we wanted. Major thunderstorms for about 45 minutes that had the little traffic on 95 at 2:00am going about 40mph. We plan to stay out of NYC for a few weeks now, at least. |

Woodpecker He or she comes to the regular feeder several times a week. But so far, not to the bird buddy to get its close up treatment. (Of course, this is the tree next to the feeder, not the feeder — I think it makes for a better photo.) Very colorful head and fun black and white back make her or him really stand out. |

Ms. Zoe! We’re back from a quick up and down trip to meet the latest addition to the family! Ms. Zoe is just about 4 months old now and doing well; as you can see. Sarah got to help with two meals while we visited. And we both joined Zoe in enjoying a favorite book, Corduroy. Of course, we also enjoyed catching up with Ian and Sopie, but Zoe was the star of the visit. She’s clearly off to a great start and Ian and Sophie are excellent parents (no surprise there). We’re looking forward to many more returns (and maybe a visit closer to home in the next few months). |

Happy Birthday Alexandria!!! Alexandria always puts on a good show. And for the 276th birthday, they kept up the tradition. It was pretty hot so we decided on Casa Rosada gelato and watching from the Masonic Memorial rather than walking down to the river. The show as great. And the crowd was pretty fun. There seemed to be a full 4th grade class there. And there was a lot of “hut, hut, hutting” up and down the steps before the fireworks. I expect there will be some heavy sleeping 4th graders tonight. And Sarah and I were very happy for the very short walk home. Sometime soon the heat and humidity will give us a break. I hope. |

Another fun day on the river I’m taking a page from our Galapagos trip and using a rashguard/sunshirt these days. It seems to be working, I’m not feeling sunburned and appreciate a little cooling when it gets wet. The river was about 3.6 today; this photo is from the Maryland chute at Angler’s Inn. It was hot, but nice to be on the river again. And that’s a pretty fun level for playing in both the Maryland and Virginia chutes. Maybe when the temps drop a bit (~92 today) I’ll be more inspired to get back up the gorge and check out Wet Bottom and Rocky Island — it’s been a while. |
